The Connaught Type-D was a planned sports car for the British automobile manufacturer Connaught and was to be built in Llanelli , Wales .
The vehicle was announced in 2004, and production was scheduled to start in 2006. The Type-D was to be a Gran Turismo with 2 + 2 seats, powered by a hybrid drive. With this concept, Connaught was ahead of its time; it wasn't until 2011 that a vehicle with a similar concept came onto the market with the Fisker Karma .
Other technical solutions of the Connaught were also unusual. So they wanted to rather than conventional batteries to supercapacitors set, and the engine should be a specially developed, very compact V10 are engine with aluminum engine block. For a four-seater, the Type-D is very compact at 4.25 m in length, about as long as the Opel Astra at the time . The V10 engine is installed behind the front axle as a front mid-engine and drives the rear axle via a manually shiftable five-speed gearbox and a limited slip differential . Thanks to a light aluminum body, the car should have an empty weight of less than a ton.
Due to difficulties with the hybrid drive, production should initially start with the Type-D GT Syracuse , an edition limited to 100 units that is only powered by an internal combustion engine and does not have an electric drive. The V10 engine with a displacement of two liters and a cylinder bank angle of 22.5 ° should be charged by a compressor in order to deliver sufficient power and thus achieve 223 kW (equivalent to 303 hp or 299 bhp).
The hybrid variant was to follow later under the name Type-D h , but the Type-D never reached series production. A first test vehicle had a Ford engine to test, but there seems to have been a prototype with a functioning V10.
