Conrad Caspar Rordorf even Rohrdorf (* 26. November 1800 in Zurich ; † 29. October 1847 at Round Top , Fayette County , Texas ) was a Swiss aquatint - etcher and landscape painter .

Life

Unspunnen with Virgin , colored aquatint from Rordorf to Wetzel

Rordorf, the son of a tailor and liqueur manufacturer, was a student of the Zurich landscape painter Johann Jakob Wetzel (1781–1834), whose landscape paintings he printed as an engraver in the work Voyages pittoresques aux lacs de la Suisse . He particularly knew how to make panoramas . From 1826 he lived in Dresden , from 1828 to 1834 in Heidelberg , where he married Anna Elisabetha Steitz on April 9, 1829. In 1840 he stayed in Düsseldorf . In 1846 he was one of the five founding members of the natural research association founded in Bonn in Texas , which had the task of traveling to Texas, collecting natural objects there and sending them to Germany to set up a museum. In January 1847, the tour group arrived by ship from Antwerp in Galveston, Texas . Together with Alwin Sörgel (1815-1875) he separated from her. He came to New Braunfels , where he drew landscapes on behalf of the Association for the Protection of German Immigrants , including the panorama of the city of Neu-Braunfels in Texas . At the end of October 1847, Rordorf accompanied Hermann Spieß , the general commissioner of the association, when he forcibly wanted to take possession of the Nassau plantation owned by the association and leased to Fredéric Armand Strubberg . At this event there was a shootout that cost both a person on the side of Strubberg and Rordorf's life. Rordorf's portfolio of more than forty drawings fell into Strubberg's hands.
