The Contoocook River is a right tributary of the Merrimack River in the US state of New Hampshire .
River course
The Contoocook River has its origins in the two small lakes Pool Pond and Contoocook Lake . From there it flows in a north-northeast direction through the small town of Jaffrey and on to Peterborough and Hillsborough . Shortly before Hillsborough, the North Branch River , the most important tributary of the Contoocook River, flows into the river on the left. Gradually the river turns towards east-north-east and passes Henniker and Contoocook . Between these two places there is the flood serving Hopkinton Dam . US Highway 202 follows the course of the river until shortly before Contoocook . Eventually the Contoocook River reaches the Merrimack River at Penacook , a northern district of Concord . The Contoocook River has a length of 114 km. It drains an area of 1961 km².
