ConventionCamp Hanover (2011)

The ConventionCamp is a conference on the topics of the digital future, social media and network culture . Since it is a mixture of a classic conference with a fixed program and a so-called unconference , the organizers prefer the self-term Internet (un) conference . It has been held annually at the Hanover Exhibition Center since 2008 and is the largest barcamp in German-speaking countries in terms of visitor numbers .

history

The ConventionCamp was launched in 2008 by the t3n magazine, the publishing house Yeebase Media and the web agency w3design . The first event took place on October 2nd, 2008 with 250 participants at the University of Hanover . The focus was initially on knowledge management and social media software for companies.

The second ConventionCamp took place on November 26th, 2009 and has already been attended by around 1,000 participants. For the first time, the Hanover Exhibition Center was the venue; the focus of the program was the generic term Web 2.0 and the effects of political decisions on it.

In 2010 the ConventionCamp was organized for the first time with the support of the Institute for Marketing and Management of the University of Hanover, and it reached 1,300 participants. For the first time, the thematic focus was on researching the digital future, in particular so-called smart cities . The German Social Media Prize was awarded for the first time during the event .

The fourth ConventionCamp was held on November 8, 2011. Against the background of Stuttgart 21 and Occupy Wall Street , the interfaces between society and the Internet were at the center of the program. A total of 1,500 visitors took part. In the evening, instead of the social media prize, the so-called t3n Web Awards were given to the best German websites in several categories.

In 2012, Julian Assange was connected to the conference via the Internet.

The fifth ConventionCamp took place on November 27, 2012. The organizers are the communications agency neuwaerts, Aufgesang Public Relation, foresee and the t3n magazine . Social business , smart life (by definition of the organizer: networking of all areas of everyday life) and media future are the main topics. Speakers include sevenload founder Ibrahim Evsan , professor of communication and media studies Beate Schneider and well-known tech blogger and netbook news founder Sascha Pallenberg expected. A keynote by Julian Assange will also be broadcast via Skype .

In 2012 the so-called Web Week Hanover took place around the ConventionCamp , during which numerous events on related topics were held. This also included numerous practical workshops .

meaning

The declared aim of the ConventionCamp is to bring decision-makers from business and research together with bloggers , geeks and other influential activists from the Internet scene who might otherwise not be able to communicate with one another so easily. The aim is to generate new ideas for the digital future. One component of the ConventionCamp is, for example, a thematic speed dating in which several people share their visions in groups of two and within a short time frame of five minutes.

Instead of the exclusive offer of frontal lectures, as is customary at conventional conferences, the aim is that speakers and listeners interact with each other on the same level. At the beginning of the event, each visitor has 45 seconds to submit their own proposal for a presentation or workshop, which all participants can vote on. The so-called free sessions are then created from the most attractive offers, which, in addition to the previously fixed expert presentations, make up 50 percent of the ConventionCamp's.

With 1,500 participants most recently, the ConventionCamp is currently (as of September 2012) the largest barcamp in the German-speaking region and, after re: publica, the second largest conference on internet topics in Germany. The topics discussed at the event achieved a wide reception in the specialist press , to which the participation of prominent speakers also contributed. For example, Markus Beckedahl , Frank Schätzing , Richard Gutjahr , Kai Biermann , Nicholas Carr and Robert Basic have participated as speakers at the ConventionCamp .
