The motor tanker Copenhagen is a double-hulled type C tanker of the Kaap Green tanker type . The ship was completely built by Schepswerf De Kaap in Meppel for GMS Copenhagen BV, Rotterdam , using a longitudinal frame construction. The specialty is that it is the first inland tanker with pod propulsion . The diesel-electric drive and modern engine management as well as an optimized hull shape enable high fuel savings of up to 30 percent. The ship was awarded the Green Award .
The double-hulled hull has ten cargo tanks with a capacity of 380 m³ each. Each tank has its own extinguishing pump with a delivery rate of 100 m³ per hour and a pneumatic drainage pump. The tanks for the transport of light chemicals are coated with zinc silicate and can be heated. In addition, the Copenhagen can hold up to 1800 m³ of ballast water . The aft apartment and the height-adjustable wheelhouse are noise-insulated and air-conditioned.
drive
The diesel-electric drive system consists of four Caterpillar - diesel generators each with 465 kW and two MGT azimuth thruster with 750 kW. Two electric motors with 375 kW are installed in each pod drive, which individually or together deliver their power to the propeller. Depending on the driving condition, loaded or empty, with or against the current, the four generators are automatically switched on. Control is taken over by the D&A Eprop system from D&A Electric from Ridderkerk . Since the electric motors deliver their full torque even at low speed , special propellers have been developed.
Two diesel generators are installed in the stern and two in the bow. In addition, a Caterpillar diesel generator type C 4.4 DI-Ta with 69 kW is available for port operations. A 500 kW bow thruster is installed in the bow for better maneuvering .
