Coral Sun Airways , under the Coral Sun Aviation brand identity from mid-2010 to early 2017 , is a Kiribati airline based in South Tarawa and based at Bonriki Airport .
history
Coral Sun Airways was founded in January 2009 by the professional pilot Jeff Jong and his wife Shiu-Fung Jong to offer scheduled domestic flights in competition with the state-owned Air Kiribati . Flight operations began in March 2009 with a leased Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander ( registration number T3-JMR ), with which the company operated connections to the other Gilbert Islands from Bonriki Airport . A second rented Britten-Norman Islander ( T3-VIN ) was taken over in May 2009. Coral Sun Airways ceased scheduled flight operations in the spring of 2010 for economic reasons and then returned both Britten-Norman Islanders to the lessor.
In June 2010, the company leased a Piper PA-23-250F ( T3-64Z ) from New Zealand's Sunair Aviation , with which charter flights under the new brand name Coral Sun Aviation took place. The aircraft was in New Zealand for repair from April 2013 to March 2015 and was replaced by a rented PA-23-250E ( ZK-PIW ) during that time . At the end of January 2015, the company entered into a cooperation with Samoa Air to operate international scheduled flights from Apia-Faleolo ( Samoa ) via Funafuti ( Tuvalu ) to Tarawa . That regard, Coral Sun Aviation in March 2015 Beechcraft B200 King Air ( T3 JMR ) into service. The scheduled service was not taken up because Samoa Air had to file for bankruptcy that same year. Instead, the company focuses on charter flights, medical transportation and search missions . At times, Coral Sun Aviation used a plane as an air taxi on behalf of the Fanning Island Resort to fly its guests from Cassidy Airport on Kiritimati Island to the hotel complex on the Tabuaeran Atoll . This connection has been operated by the state-owned Air Kiribati since 2016 .
Since 2017, the company has been working under its original name Coral Sun Airways with the Australian company Rock Expeditions , which offers individual vacation trips in the Southwest Pacific especially for sport anglers.
