The Stechlin vendace ( Coregonus fontanae ), also called Fontane vendace, is an endemic species of fish that only occurs in the Great Stechlinsee in Brandenburg, is ten to twelve centimeters long and four to five years old. The fish mainly lives in cool water at depths below 20 meters and feeds on gill pods and copepods . The Stechlin whitefish received its scientific species name in honor of the writer Theodor Fontane , who described the country and people around the lake in his novel “ Der Stechlin ”.

According to the history of the origin of the Heimatsee, the small fish species must have developed after the last Ice Age , i.e. less than 12,000 years ago. This is a relatively short evolutionary period for speciation . This also took place without geographical isolation as a trigger, because the whitefish ( Coregonus albula ), from which the species has apparently split off, came and still occurs in the same body of water. The Stechlin whitefish only occurs in this one lake and is one of the twelve fish species that occur exclusively or predominantly in Germany.

The species name is not formed according to the international rules for zoological nomenclature , according to which a male namesake would have to have the ending -i.
