Coriomeris scabricornis is a bug from the family of the border bugs (Coreidae).

features

The bugs reach a body length of 7.5 to 9 millimeters and have a gray to dark brown body. The back of the abdomen is black, the last, clay-yellow tergite has a black stripe in the middle. The antennae of the animals are strong, the second segment has only evenly short and sloping hairs. This hair is somewhat more irregular in length in the similar species Coriomeris denticulatus .

The pronotum is broadest just behind the base and tapering to the side. The side edge is covered with teeth that become finer towards the base, the similar species has strong thorns at this point. Just behind the tip, a small spine can be seen at the base of the pronotum; this spine, unlike C. denticulatus, is slightly curved outwards. The thighs ( femora ) of the middle pairs of legs have no teeth, those of the hind legs in front of the tip have a large and a series of small teeth; C. denticulatus has two large teeth in addition to several small ones.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Central and Eastern Europe and is apparently spreading to the west, so the Netherlands was only colonized after 1987. The animals occur on heat-exposed, sparsely overgrown ruderal areas and dry grassland , where they are very well camouflaged by their coloring and sculpting on the top.

Way of life

The bugs feed by piercing their host plants and sucking out the sap from legumes (Fabaceae). These mainly include the genera clover ( Trifolium ), alfalfa ( Medicago ) and Haucheln ( Ononis ). The insects overwinter in the loose leaf litter of heather ( Calluna ) and cytisus ( Cytisus ). They appear from the end of April and lay their eggs individually from May to July on and under their host plants. From the end of July or August, adults of the new generation can sometimes still be found in September. The larvae live almost exclusively on the ground. The adults are very happy to fly in warm weather and can often be found in the herb layer .
