Cornberger tracking plate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cornberger tracking plate is a paleontological find from the geological time Perm in Cornberg in the Richelsdorf mountains .

geology

From the western region of Cornberg, a primeval mountain range stretched from the northeast and southwest, roughly describing the line from today's Harz to the Hunsrück . The Cornberger sandstone developed over the weathered debris of this mountain range . This is a sediment from the Younger Permian Period. Layers of light-colored sandstone with a thickness of 15 to 18 meters were formed within a few thousand to one hundred thousand years. The sandstone formed about 258 million years ago. Due to the high proportion of quartz, the sandstone is very hard and resistant and is characterized by appealing color structures and grains . Sandstone has been quarried in Cornberg quarry since the 13th century . The sandstone was used as a pavement slab, on facades or for sculptures. The sandstone was processed u. a. in the Kassel Fridericianum and in the Eberbach monastery .

Cornberger tracking plate

In 1997, the Cornberg track plate was discovered in the sediment of the Cornberg quarry . With 100 m², the Cornberger track plate is the largest discovered track plate in Europe . Different footsteps, running and dragging traces of Permian pelycosaurs and therapsids can be seen on the track plate . The publicly accessible tracking plate is located at the lowest point of the Cornberg quarry on the bell pond .

There are comparable paleontological finds in the Grand Canyon , in Scotland , Italy , Russia and South Africa and thus prove Alfred Wegener's universal land mass Pangea .

In 2016, the Cornberg sandstone quarry was named Hessian Geotope of the Year .
