Cornelius Haga
Corneli (u) s Haga (born January 28, 1578 in Schiedam , † August 12, 1654 in The Hague ) was the first Dutch ambassador to the Ottoman Empire .
Life
Haga was born in Schiedam. His father was Dirk Lambrechtszoon, a businessman, organist and member of the city council of Schiedam and an active member of the church. Haga visited before at the University of Leiden law studied, a Latin school in Schiedam. He later went into the diplomatic service and became envoy in Stockholm . He then became the first diplomatic representative of the Netherlands in Constantinople from 1612 to 1639 . Haga laid the foundations for diplomatic relations there and set up numerous consulates at the most important ports and trade centers in the Ottoman Empire, for example in Thessaloniki , Athens , Izmir , Aleppo , Tunis and Algiers .
In 1639 Haga returned to the Netherlands. From 1645 until his death in 1654 he was President of the High Council of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland . Cornelius Haga and his wife Alithea Brasser were buried in Schiedam Church.
Trivia
A Boeing 737-800 with the registration PH-CDE ( Corendon Dutch Airlines ) was named Cornelis Haga .
