Cornelius van Mander (born October 3, 1611 in Delft , † probably November 1657 in Schleswig ) was a sculptor and stonemason of Mannerism from the artist family van Mander, who worked in the northern Netherlands as well as in the Duchy of Schleswig and Denmark.

Life

Cornelius van Mander was the son of the painter and maker Karel van Mander II and the grandson of the art theorist and painter Karel van Mander (1548–1606) . The court painter Karel van Mander III was his older brother. Cornelius van Mander is recorded in Copenhagen in 1626 and as a tenant of an estate in Schleswig in 1639 . From 1645 to 1647 he lived again in the Netherlands, in the Predikherenstraat in Utrecht . From 1648 he worked on a city gate of Tönning and from 1650 was commissioned as a court sculptor for Duke Friedrich III. employed at Gottorf Castle and in Schleswig. In 1655 he received permission from the king to bring parts of his mother's estate from Copenhagen to Schleswig.

One of his works is the Hercules Fountain in the Hercules pond in the Gottorfer Neuwerkgarten in Schleswig. In the Blue Hall of Gottorf Castle, the fireplace with the Hermen pilasters and auricle consoles on the south side of the room is attributed to him. In the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in the Friedrichsberg district of Schleswig there is a remarkable baptismal font made of sandstone with an octagonal dome with auricular cartouches on a shaft with two putti as carrying figures, which is marked with the inscription Cornelius u. Cornelie von Mander 1651 is signed and dated. His son Johan van Mander (1641–1689) also became a stonemason and sculptor in Schleswig.
