Corpus Barga

Andrés García de Barga y Gómez de la Serna , with the pseudonym Corpus Barga (born June 9, 1887 in Madrid , † August 8, 1975 in Lima , Peru ), was a Spanish poet , narrator , essayist and journalist .

Life

Barga was born in Madrid in 1887 into a middle-class family and initially studied mining science, but gave up the subject and devoted himself to journalism (periodismo) from 1906. At the age of 17 he published his first volume of poetry Cantares (1904). He published his works in the republican press: in El País , El Radical and others, and was a frequent participant in the literary circle in the Café de Levante .

Between 1914 and 1948 he lived as a correspondent in Paris , from where he made many trips from 1920, especially to Italy . He maintained a lively exchange with other writers such as Pío Baroja or Ramón María del Valle-Inclán and worked for many different magazines such as El Sol , Revista de Occidente and La Nación from Buenos Aires . In 1930 La Nación sent him to Berlin and in May he traveled with the Zeppelin LZ 127 on the Berlin- Seville - Pernambuco - Baltimore route and wrote reports about the trip.

He was an active republican during the Spanish Civil War and supported the purchase of French aircraft for the army, whereupon he was forced into exile in 1939 - together with the writer Antonio Machado , whom he accompanied to Collioure , where he died in 1939.

In 1948 he settled in Lima (Peru) and headed the School of Journalism (Escuela de Periodismo) at the Universidad de San Marcos . He worked with various exile magazines. He published his memoirs under the title Los pasos contados as a four-volume work. In 1974 he was awarded the Premio de la Crítica for one of his volumes from Los galgos verdugos (1973) . He died in Lima in 1975.
