Colpogyne betsiliensis is the only type of monotypic genus Colpogyne in the family of Gesneriad (Gesneriaceae). This endemic occurs only in central Madagascar in the province of Fianarantsoa at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters. Only a few sites are known.

description

Vegetative characteristics

Colpogyne betsiliensis is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms a short rhizome .

The alternate leaves arranged in a rosette are sessile or have a very short stalk. The simple leaf blade is elongated-lanceolate towards the base, narrowing with a serrated edge. Both leaf surfaces are woolly hairy.

Generative characteristics

On a long inflorescence stem there are a few to several flowers in the zymous inflorescence, usually not pairs and there are no bracts .

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are only fused at their base and the five sepals are oval-elliptical. The five petals are fused into a short corolla tube. The bell-shaped corolla is completely white or with a purple border. The five short crown lobes are bent back. There are two stamens that are inserted at the base of the corolla tube and are about as long as the corolla tube. The nectar glands are arranged in a ring and slightly lobed. The relatively short ovary is egg-shaped and somewhat flattened. The short style ends in a heady scar.

The capsule fruits are short and straight (not twisted). The seeds are warty.

Systematics and botanical history

The first description was in 1967 under the name ( Basionym ) Streptocarpus betsiliensis by Jean-Henri Humbert in Adansonia , Series 2, 7, 3, page 289. Brian Laurence Burtt presented this species in 1971 under the name Colpogyne betsiliensis (Humbert) BLBurtt in Flore de Madagascar et des Comores , family 180, page 150 into the genus Colpogyne newly established by him . The genus name Colpogyne is composed of the Latin Wor colpus for "channel narrowing" and the Greek γυνη word gyne for "Woman ovarian" together. The specific epithet betsiliensis is a combination of a Malagasy place name and the Latin suffix - liensis for an indication of origin.

Colpogyne betsiliensis is the only species of the genus Colpogyne from the tribe Trichosporeae in the subfamily Cyrtandroideae within the family Gesneriaceae . Even the synonym Streptocarpus betsiliensis shows that this species is closely related to the species of the genus Streptocarpus . It differs through the short, radially symmetrical calyxes and the non-twisted fruits.

But according to Nishii et al. In 2015, the genus Streptocarpus is to be defined further with two sub-genera and several sections and also contains the species of the genera Hovanella A. Weber & BLBurtt and Colpogyne B.L.Burtt . In Nishii et al. In 2015 this species, Streptocarpus betsiliensis Humbert, again belongs to the genus Streptocarpus Lindl. sl in the Colpogyne section (BLBurtt) Mich.Möller & Bellstedt of the subgenus Streptocarpus . Result of the investigations by Nishii et al. 2015 is that all species of the tribe Streptocarpinae belong to the genus Streptocarpus sl and thus also Saintpaulia .
