Costas Lapavitsas ( Greek Κωνσταντίνος Λαπαβίτσας , born January 20, 1961 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek economist.

Life

Costas Lapavitsas studied at the London School of Economics and received a Masters there in 1982. In 1986 he received his PhD from Birkbeck College . Since 1999 he has worked as a lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and was appointed professor there in 2008.

In 2007 he founded the Research on Money and Finance (RMF) group, a network of economists who deal with monetary and financial policy in contemporary capitalism. Lapavitsas since 2008 regular columnist in The Guardian .

In the general election in January 2015 , Lapavitsas was elected to the Greek parliament as a member of the Imathia constituency for the SYRIZA party . In 2015, during the Greek sovereign debt crisis , he asked the Tsipras government to exit the euro.
