Costineşti is a municipality on the Romanian Black Sea coast about 25 kilometers south of the district capital Constanța .
It consists of the districts Costineşti, Costineşti-Tabara (Costineşti village) and Schitu and is located on a bay with a long sandy beach, surrounded by an approximately 20 meter high cliff and a freshwater lake in the hinterland. Costineşti is located directly on the Constanța– Mangalia railway line .
history
Until 1878 Costineşti - like the whole of Dobruja - was Turkish, called Mangear Punar , which means buffalo fountain in German. Since it was mainly settled by Germans who immigrated from Bessarabia , it was also called the buffalo fountain. Under this name, the place developed into a popular vacation spot for the Transylvanian Saxons . The novel of the same name by the Kronstadt poet Adolf Meschendörfer also takes place in Büffelbrunnen . The Dobruja Germans were resettled in 1940. Originally just a small village, Costineşti has developed into a popular holiday resort because of its sandy beach.
During the communist era it was primarily known as the “youth seaside resort” with inexpensive, state-subsidized bungalow accommodations for young people and students from all over Eastern Europe.
In the 1990s a building boom set in; Villas, holiday flats, guest houses and hotels were built, especially in the northern part of the village along the steep coast towards Tuzla Cape.
The landmark of Costineşti is the Evangelia shipwreck , a freighter that ran aground only a few hundred meters from the coast in the 1960s and has been rusting since then. Another symbol of the place was the obelisk on the beach. However, the monument was destroyed in a severe storm in September 2005. The floods also destroyed several houses and part of the beach. The obelisk has meanwhile been replaced by a new, identical look.
