Costularia hornei is a species of the sour grass family(Cyperaceae). It occurs in the Seychelles .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Costularia hornei is a perennial herbaceous plant with rhizomes that reaches a height of 1.25 meters. The upstanding, triangular and unbranched below the inflorescence stems are green with a brownish band above the node ( Nodien ). Ligule are absent. The foliage leaves standing in basal clusters are linear with a length of up to 1 meter with serrated edges.

Generative characteristics

The panicle-shaped total inflorescences are up to 45 cm long with numerous overhanging branches that are up to 12 cm long and stand over linear bracts . The up to 5 mm long flower stalks are above awl bracts. The spikelets consist of one or two 5 mm long flowers that stand in the axils of husks. The 5 mm long outer husks are triangular, lanceolate and membranous. The upper husks are smaller. The rachis is sinuous, flattened and has three ribs. The tiny, elongated nuts are surrounded by seven or eight times longer, fluffy, flattened bristles.

Costularia hornei occurs on the Seychelles islands Mahé , Silhouette , Praslin and Curieuse .

habitat

Costularia hornei is a common undergrowth that occurs at medium and high altitudes. It can be found both in the shady spots of the Morne Blanc and in the blazing sun on the glacis at the summit of the Copolia . Along the Sans Souci Interstate Road it grows, often in association with lemongrass ( Cymbopogon citratus ), in tiny bottom pockets in crevices of the granite rock .

Taxonomy

The first description of this species was in 1894 under the name Schoenus hornei by Charles Baron Clarke in Conspectus Floræ Africæ; ou, enumeration des plantes d'Afrique. Bruxelles , 5, p. 657. It was placed in 1938 by Georg Kükenthal in Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis , 44, p. 189 in the genus Costularia . Other synonyms for Costularia hornei (CBClarke) Kük. are: Costularia hornei var. rectirhachilloidea Kük., Lophoschoenus hornei (CBClarke) Stapf, Tetraria hornei (CBClarke) T.Koyama. The specific epithet hornei honors the Scottish botanist John Horne (1835–1905).
