Costus lima is a species ofthe Costaceae family . It is found from southern Central America to northern South America.

features

Costus lima is an herbaceous plant and reaches a height of up to 4 meters. The leaves are densely hairy on the underside and are 5 to 15 centimeters wide and 15 to 60 centimeters long.

The cone-like, broadly egg-shaped to cylindrical inflorescences are 5 to 20 centimeters long and have a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. The crown is densely downy to silky hairy, the labellum white to yellow with a red outer end.

distribution

Costus lima is native from Honduras to Ecuador and Venezuela, it inhabits primary and secondary forests.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1904 by Karl Moritz Schumann .

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Costus lima var. Lima : It occurs from Honduras to Venezuela and Ecuador.
  • Costus lima var. Scabrimarginatus Maas : It occurs from Panama to northwestern Venezuela and Ecuador.
