Origin and history

For centuries, Coton de Tuléar ( French cotton from Tuléar ) was the exclusive lap dog of the wealthy residents of Tuléar in southern Madagascar. The French Bichon Frisé , the Bolognese , the Maltese , the Havanese and the Lowchen (Petit chien lion) are related breeds . After Madagascar his ancestors came probably with French soldiers and administrators. Until about 20 years ago the dog was virtually unknown in Europe and America and difficult to come by.

description

The Coton de Tuléar can grow up to 29 cm tall and weigh 6 kg, the triangular lop-ears set high on the skull are hardly visible in the white fur. The fur is characterized by being soft and fluffy . Some traces of light gray (mixture of white and black hair) or fallow prickling (mixture of white and fawn hair) are allowed on the ears. Such traces are tolerated on the other parts of the body, provided that the impression of an overall white coat is not disturbed. The Coton de Tuléar has no undercoat .

Essence

The breed standard describes the Coton de Tuléar as cheerful, balanced and very sociable with conspecifics, other animals and humans; it adapts perfectly to every lifestyle. It is there emphasized that the essence of the Coton de Tuléar is one of the most important characteristics of the breed.
