The Bolognese is an Italian breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 9, Section 1.1, Standard No. 196 ).

Origin & history

The Bolognese (Bichon Bolognese) is the Bichon of Italy and is a breed of dog that was primarily native to the Italian city of Bologna , but did not originally come from there. It was believed to have been brought to the city by sailors from the Balearic Islands and was common in France and Italy during the Renaissance . Its origins merge with those of the Maltese , because its ancestors are the same small dogs that Aristotle (384–322 BC) mentions under the Latin term canes melitenses . Already known in Roman times , the Bolognese in particular was one of those highly valued gifts that the mighty of this world used to make for an entire epoch, especially at the courts of the Medici , Borgia and d'Este . Cosimo de 'Medici (1389–1464) brought eight Bolognese to Brussels to give them to the Belgian nobility. Philip II , King of Spain 1556–1598, received two Bolognese as a gift from the Duke d'Este. He thanked them with the words that these two dogs were "the most royal gift that one could give an emperor". Even Madame de Pompadour , Catherine the Great and the Empress Maria Theresa had Bolognese. There are depictions of him on engravings from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as on paintings by Titian , Pieter Brueghel the Elder , Anthony van Dyck and Francisco de Goya . There is a close relationship with the Maltese , Havanese and Bichon Frisé . All four breeds belong to the Bichons, which means "lap dog" and is derived from the French bichonner (= to pamper). This goes back to the court of Heinrich III. , King of France 1574–1589, where the popularity of these dogs peaked. It is said that the king had his Bichon Frisé carried on a pillow by a lackey everywhere. Other related breeds are the Coton de Tuléar and the Löwchen (Petit chien lion).

description

Small companion dog with a stocky and compact body. Weight 2.5 to 4 kg, height at the withers 25 to 30 cm. The length of the trunk, measured between the tip of the shoulder and the ischial tuberosity, corresponds to the height at the withers. Straight back with a high-set tail that curves happily over the back. His movement is free and energetic, slightly prancing, while the head is carried nobly and elegantly. The hair is long from head to tail, from back line to paws all over the body, softly falling and curly of pure white. The head is slightly egg-shaped, almost square muzzle with a black nose and large, round eyes in deep black with black eyelid rims, not protruding, expressive. The ears are set high, long and drooping. The Bolognese is a dog of delicate and fine physique, a popular and adaptable companion and family dog , very enterprising and docile. Since it only needs a little exercise, it is also very suitable for a city apartment.
