List of domestic dogs

The Lowchen is a French breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 9, Section 1.3, Standard No. 233 ).

Origin and history

Dogs of the current Löwchen breed seem to have existed as early as the Middle Ages : In the cathedral of Amiens , built in the 13th century, you can see two small dogs carved in stone that correspond to the Löwchen type. In the 15th century, its characteristic silhouette was often depicted in carpets. The name comes from an old shear method: the rear part is bald except for the tail and feet, the front part with the lush hair, so that it really looked like a small male lion . It is related to the Bichons , so there is a close relationship to the Maltese , Havanese , Bichon Frisé , Bolognese and Coton de Tuléar .

Formerly the classic fashion dog of the nobility, it almost completely disappeared from the scene at the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century. By 1965 there were hardly more than 40 copies worldwide. As a result, the number of dogs slowly increased again. In 1976 the breed was recognized by the British Kennel Club and in 1995 by the FCI with a new, slightly changed standard.
