Cottonwood is a place with the status of a census-designated place in southern Shasta County in the northern US state of California .

geography

The village is located in the north of the Sacramento Valley in hilly land. At Cottonwood, Cottonwood Creek flows into the Sacramento River . The location is off Interstate 5 and was on historic Route 99 .

population

In 2010, 3,316 people lived in Cottonwood. 80% of the population were white, followed by 10.6% Latinos . The median household income was $ 30,445. 33.5% of the residents lived below the poverty line .

history

By 1849, Cottonwood was a rest stop on the Oregon Trail . In 1852 a post office was built. In 1859 the German emigrant Jacob Foster acquired the area north of Cottonwood Creek, on which the place stands today. Foster built a hotel. After the railroad reached the place, it served from 1872 as a transshipment point for wood, cattle and other agricultural products from areas along the Sacramento River and Cottonwood Creek.
