Couderc Noir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Couderc Noir is a red grape variety . It is a naturally occurring interspecific new breed between the American hybrid vine Jaeger 70 (Vitis rupestris × Vitis lincecumii) × an unknown Vitis Vinifera species, bred by Hermann Jaeger . The crossing of this hybrid vine was discovered by Eugène Contassot in a vine field. He brought the berry pips he had collected to the well-known grape breeder Georges Couderc , who planted the pips and cultivated the grape variety.

The late-ripening variety is very resistant to the genuine and downy mildew and against the raw rot . Couderc Noir produces alcohol-rich, deep dark wines with aromas of currants and tar. The high-yielding variety was widespread in southern France at the beginning of the 20th century and was still ahead of Cabernet Sauvignon in the French grape variety index in the 1970s . The inferior grape variety is increasingly being cleared because of its own (rather unpleasant) taste. New vineyards are no longer created. According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera . In 2007, 236 hectares of vineyards were surveyed in France (source ONIVINS)
