Craig Radford Barrett (born August 29, 1939 in San Francisco , California ) is an American engineer, manager, former board member and CEO of Intel .

Life

Barrett studied from 1957 at Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in 1961 and a master's degree in 1963 and a doctorate in materials science in 1964. He was then until 1974 Associate Professor at Stanford University. In 1964/65 he was at the National Physical Laboratory and in 1972 he was a Fulbright Fellow at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby , where he worked with Rodney Cotterill .

From 1975 he was at Intel, initially as a manager in the area of ​​reliability and quality assurance. In 1983/84 he headed the Components Assembly , in 1984 he was appointed Vice President and in 1987 Senior Vice President . In 1990 he became Executive Vice President of the Microcomputer Components Group . He was promoted to Intel's Board of Directors in 1992 and became COO in 1993 . In 1997 he became President of Intel and in 1998 CEO, which he remained until 2005 when he became Chairman of the Board. In 2009 he resigned as chairman and member of the supervisory board.

After retiring from Intel, he taught at the Thunderbird School for Global Management in Glendale , Arizona . He is co-president of the Sakolkowo Innovation Center . Barrett is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and an honorary doctorate from the University of Novosibirsk. In 2004 he received the Robert N. Noyce Medal .

He is married to Barbara McConnell , with whom he has two children. She is Secretary of the Air Force and was the US Ambassador to Finland in 2008/09 .
