Stanley Dewayne Burrell Jr. (Born September 16, 1984 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Burrell first played for KK Bosna and in the NBA Development League (D-League) before moving back to Europe in 2009 and playing in Belgium and Poland . In the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 Burrell played for the German first division club Eisbären Bremerhaven. Afterwards, Burrell played mostly only briefly in Turkey , Israel and Belarus and in 2014 also briefly in Japan . Since the 2015/16 season, Burrell has been playing for the former Cypriot champions APOEL from the capital Nicosia .

Career

After high school graduation Burrell initially went to the preparation of studies on the "Prep School" Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham (Virginia) before settling in 2004 at the Xavier University of Cincinnati in Ohio enrolled, where he worked for the college team Musketeers in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) of the NCAA played. The Musketeers were among the most successful basketball teams in the A-10 and were also able to win the Conference championship tournament once in Burrell's season. After the tournament success in 2006, they lost in the two following years as the best team in the main round twice as the top seeded team in the semi-finals of the A-10 championship. In the national NCAA finals, however, you could continuously improve. After a first round defeat in 2006 and a second round defeat after extra time in 2007 against the eventual finalists Buckeyes of Ohio State University , they reached the 2008 Regional Final or Elite Eight , which was lost to the UCLA Bruins .

After Burrell had not been selected by any club in the 2008 NBA draft and could not earn a contract via the training camps of the NBA clubs, he switched to the Bosnian champions KK Bosna in Sarajevo at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . The club, which also did not take part in any continental European competition, had financial problems and so it agreed with the professional novice Burrell in January 2009 to terminate the contract. Burrell then went back to his home country and played for the Austin Toros in the D-League . The farm team of the San Antonio Spurs , however, he could not recommend himself for a trial contract in the NBA. Then Burrell went back to Europe in 2009 and played in the Belgian Ethias League for the RBC from Pepinster . The bottom of the table of the previous season only missed qualifying for the play-offs for the Belgian championship because of the poorer direct comparison . In the following season 2010/11 Burrell moved to league rivals Okapi Aalstar from Aalst . After the second place in the main round, they moved into the final series, in which, however, they had no chance against the then series champion Spirou BC Charleroi and could only become runner-up. For the 2011/12 season, Burrell moved to the Polish Tauron League to Energa Czarni from Słupsk , who could not improve compared to the previous season and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the championship play-offs.

For the 2012/13 season, Burrell received a contract with the Eisbären from Bremerhaven in the 2012/13 Basketball Bundesliga . The polar bears, who missed the championship play-offs for the first time in two years, could not improve either and had to fight for relegation over the course of the season. After relegation was achieved, they separated and Burrell signed a contract in Turkey with Royal Halı from Gaziantep for the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi 2013/14 .
