The Cranberry River is a 39-kilometer left tributary of the Gauley River in Pocahontas County , Webster County, and Nicholas Counties in the US state of West Virginia . It drains an area of around 208 km² in the southern Allegheny Mountains .
The Cranberry River, along with its tributaries, is one of the best trout fishing waters in the eastern United States .
course
The Cranberry River is formed by the confluence of the North Fork Cranberry River and South Fork Cranberry River in Pocahontas County. The South Fork, which rises on Cranberry Mountain west of the Highland Scenic Highway and flows through the Cranberry Glades , is the longer of the two source rivers at 14.5 kilometers. The North Fork is 3.2 kilometers long and has its source on Black Mountain
The merged river initially flows in two larger arcs in a westerly and then in a northwestern direction. After the confluence of the Aldrich Branch , it takes a predominantly south-westerly course and finally flows into the Gauley River at Woodbine near Craigsville .
Because the Cranberry River runs primarily in the territory of the United States Forest Service , few people live on the banks of the river. However, there are several campsites and picnic areas by the river.
