Vegetative characteristics

The Pyrenean autumn crocus is a spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that probably reaches heights of 8 to 17 centimeters. This geophyte forms tubers as persistent organs. Underground runners arise from the axillary buds of the tubers . The three to four leaves are 2 to 4 millimeters wide.

Generative characteristics

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The 2 × 3 bracts are mostly deep purple, rarely lilac purple. The perigone lobes are blunt, 30 to 60 millimeters long and 9 to 20 millimeters wide, and no nerves can be clearly seen on them.

The flowering period extends from September to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The Pyrenees autumn crocus is found in northern Spain as well as southwest and central France . It grows in open, moist meadows at altitudes from 0 to 2000 meters. The Pyrenees autumn crocus is naturalized here and there in England.

The Pyrenees autumn crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and lawns.
