Crystalic is a Finnish death metal band from Tampere , which was founded in 1998, disbanded in 2011 and has been active again since 2012.

history

The band was founded in 1998 by the guitarist Toni Tieaho, but from the end of 1999 the project paused after a demo called Stormwalker due to the lack of interest from other musicians. Tieaho then joined the band The Prophecy in 2000, which recorded a total of three demos with different musicians. On the third demo Mystical the Prophecy line-up consisted of Tieaho, singer Jarno "Frank" Moberg, bassist Arto Tissari and drummer Matti Johansson. In 2002 Crystalic continued their activity and consisted of Tieaho, bassist Tissari, singer Moberg and two musicians from the band Masterstroke named Niko Rauhala (electric guitar) and Janne Juutinen (drums). With this line-up, the demo Revitalized was recorded and isolated concerts were held. In 2003 the drummer Johansson also joined the cast. In July 2004 the demo redemption was started. Both Tissari and Johansson worked for Korpiklaani , which led to the former leaving Korpiklaani to devote himself to Crystalic, and Johansson leaving Crystalic in the summer of 2005 to be able to play at Korpiklaani. Timo Hanhijoki joined the team a little later as the new drummer. Later that year, Erik Grönroos was hired as the second guitarist. In December 2005 the demo Carnival of Flesh was recorded. The group then recorded their debut album, for which they chose songs from two previous demos, but also used new songs. The album was released in early 2007 under the name Watch Us Deteriorate on Thundering Records and Manitou Music . In August Grönroos left the group and was then replaced by Mikko Mattila. This was followed by appearances as opening act for Before the Dawn and concerts with Gloria Morti , Pressure Points and Sightless . In the Christmas season of 2007, a music video for the song Severe Punishment was also created. In the next few months the singer Moberg left the group for personal reasons, whereupon Matti Auerkallio (ex- Farmakon , Soulfallen ) took up his post temporarily . Rehearsals followed and the planning for the recordings of the second album followed, which then began in December 2008. During the recording, however, Auerkallio's singing turned out to be unsuitable, whereupon the recording was canceled and the search for a new singer began. After a long search, the recordings in the MSTR studio were continued with the singer Lasse Heinonen . In October 2009 a first promo demo was completed, with which the band presented to record companies. However, this effort to get a record deal was unsuccessful, so the album was released as a free download under the name Persistence . In 2011, Crystalic broke up due to casting problems.

After Tieaho had played in other bands from Tampere, he decided to write his own material again. With the keyboardist Felipe Muñoz, who had previously been active with him at Crystalic, he founded an as yet nameless project. In the course of 2012 the line-up was supplemented by the drummer Janne Noponen, the singer Marko Eskola and the original Crystalic bassist Arto Tissari. While they were writing on new songs, it was decided to revive Crystalic. As a result, a first new song was recorded in the MSTR studio in November 2012, which was released as a single under the name Scion .

style

Frederik from Metal.de wrote in his review of Watch Us Deteriorate that you can hear Melodic Death Metal in the Scandinavian style with a slight American influence. The electric guitars are sometimes happy, sometimes dark, but always very melodic. Occasionally the group sounds a bit like Children of Bodom . However, many songs would be similar and many ideas would repeat themselves. Luxi Lahtinen from metal-rules.com stated in his review of Persistence that the release is similar to the last three records of Death , which is especially clear in the sound of the electric guitar.
