Farmakon was a Finnish progressive death metal band from Tampere that was formed in 2001 and split up in 2010.
history
The band was founded in the spring of 2000, when Toni Salminen played the Opeth song Still Life to Marko Eskola. Eskolo then began to be interested in guttural singing , whereas he had previously had experience as a funk singer. In winter he single-handedly learned the singing style of Mikael Åkerfeldt . Together with Salminen he worked on the first songs and Riku Airisto, drummer with his previous band Planar Gallery, and the guitarist Lassi Paunonen, who Eskola knew from Party, soon joined them. In April 2001, Farmakon was founded. Eskola took over the bass as well as the vocals.
After the group had developed the first three songs, they went to the studio to rehearse and record them. For a short time it was considered to end the project again, as the members were still involved in other projects, but this idea was soon rejected. A few days after the songs were uploaded to MP3.com , Lee Berrett (Ex- Extreme Noise Terror ) gave the band a contract with his Elitist Records label , which was part of Earache Records , in September 2002. February and March 2003 came about the band went to the same studio as before to record the debut album A Warm Glimpse under the direction of Pirkka Rännäli . The album was released that same year. Then Matti Auerkallio joined the band as the new drummer. After the breakup of Elitist Records, the group switched to Four Seasons Records , which in 2007 released the second album Robin . Then the guitarist Lassi Paunonen left the band, for which the live guitarist Kim Wirzenius joined. The band also worked on a new album with the working title Syan . In 2008, the arrival of new bassist Pekka Kauppila was announced, as well as that Riku Airisto would return to the band to play the drums on Syan . A little later, the release of Robin in the USA was announced by Candlelight Records . In September 2010 the breakup of the band was announced. Syan was never published.
style
According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , the band is often accused of copying Opeth. In his review of A Warm Glimpse, Martin Wickler also found comparisons with bands like Opeth or Mr. Bungle not absurd, although Farmakon could not get hold of these bands. " Scandinavian death metal, richly spiced with a pinch of seventies prog rock , funk and jazz as well as a small overdose of chemical substances" serve as the basis .
