Soulfallen is a Finnish melodic death and dark metal band from Jyväskylä , which was founded in 1996 under the name Blacksmith .

history

The band, founded in 1996, was initially called Blacksmith. In January 1999 the first demo Beneath a Thick Satin Moon was recorded in Studio Watercastle in Jyväskylä ; the line-up now consisted of the bassist and singer Kai Leikola, the guitarist Christian Jörgensen, the keyboardist Turo Marttila and the drummer Juha Pesonen. In the following year the next demo followed with Outcast / Forlorn , whereby the group has now been expanded by the second guitarist Mikko Luontama. However, since the members had to do their military service, the band was inactive for much of the rest of the year. A little later it consisted only of Leikola. He brought in Tuomas Ekholm as keyboard player and Jimmy Salmi as drummer. The band has been known under the name Soulfallen since 2003. In 2004 the first demo Dark Remains appeared with a new band name , which was recorded in Studio Watercastle under the direction of Arttu Sarvanne . In 2005, the group wrote new material while making various appearances. In early 2006, a second demo was then recorded, which was titled Death of the Tyrant . In February of that year, Soulfallen signed a record deal with Off Records Finland , after which the recordings for the debut album in the Watercastle studio with Arttu Sarvanne took place in April and May. The material was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios . The album was released in September under the name World Expiration , with Firebox Records taking over the distribution. The year 2008 was spent playing concerts and writing material for a second album. That same year the band also made their first appearance outside of Finland, playing in Russia . She also produced her first music video for the song Death of the Tyrant . In November of that year, the band went back to the Watercastle studio to record the second album. The recordings lasted three weeks and extended into December. In January 2009 the material was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios. The album entitled Grave New World was released that same year. After that, Soulfallen went on tour, not only through Finland, but also through the Baltic States , where she played with Cannibal Corpse in Vilnius , among others . In the summer of 2011, the third album was recorded in Studio Watercastle, which was released in early 2012 under the name The Promise of Hell on the band's own label Grave New Music. It was number 46 in the Finnish album charts.

style

Patrick “Border” Franken from metalnews.de wrote in his review of World Expiration that “powerful wind orchestral interludes”, some of which are supported by string instruments, would appear again and again on the whole album. The group plays a modern form of Dark Metal, which occasionally uses certain elements from Death and Black Metal . Deep growling as well as “the slow, sometimes doomy pounding beat” would remind of Runemagick . All in all, the album “ grunted , screeched , whispered, mossed , chopped down [and] cried”, with occasional breaks . Dimitris Karametros from metal-temple.com assigned the group to Melodic Death Metal in his review of Grave New World , with a sad and pessimistic mood. On the album, the group returned to their more aggressive origins, but the use of the keyboard also gave the songs a symphonic and dark character. When he reviewed The Promise of Hell , Walter von Metal.de also assigned the group to Melodic Death Metal, with this third one now completing a text concept that began with the debut album. In addition to riffs that sound like At the Gates , there are also similarities to Callenish Circle , Scorngrain , Shade Empire and Ghost Brigade . He described the singing as complex and frightening.
