Before the Dawn was a dark metal band from Finland.

history

Before the Dawn was founded in 1999 by Tuomas Saukkonen as a solo project. After a demo had been recorded by Saukkonen alone and a second with the help of a drummer friend, a few musicians joined them to complete the line-up. After further changes in the line-up, MCD Gehenna was recorded in autumn 2000 and released in spring 2001. Another MCD followed, called My Darkness , but it was never presented to the public. In the course of this, however, a recording contract was signed with the Spanish label Locomotive Records , under which the album My Darkness was released in 2003 , which contains the songs of the MCD of the same name.

The second album 4:17 am was released in 2004, a DVD with the title The First Chapter 2005. After further line-up changes, Before the Dawn became a solo project by Tuomas Saukkonen again. He recorded the album The Ghost (2006) almost single-handedly. Singer and bassist Lars Eikind (vocals, ex- khold ) and Juho Räihä (guitar solos), who were an integral part of the reformed band from then on, were already guest musicians . Since the completion of the album Deadlight (2007) - on which Saukkonen recorded the drums himself - the drummer Dani Miettinen completed the line-up.

2007 saw a change of record company. The single Deadsong and the album Deadlight were released on the Finnish label Stay Heavy Records , which released the second single Faithless in July 2007 , which, like Deadsong , reached number 2 in the Finnish charts in the first week of release.

At the end of October 2008 the band released their fifth studio album Soundscape of Silence on Stay Heavy Records , which entered the Finnish charts at number 14. Atte Palokangas was officially part of the band as a drummer since summer 2009.

In the spring of 2010, Before the Dawn released the EP Decade of Darkness , which entered the Finnish singles chart at number 1 in its first week. In February 2011, the worldwide edition, supplemented with a DVD "Live at Summer Breeze Open Air 2009", came onto the market.

Deathstar Rising was released by Nuclear Blast in late February 2011 and made it into the Finnish top 10 album charts.

As a personal success, band mastermind Tuomas Saukkonen received the Finnish Metal Award for “Best Musician 2011”, and Before the Dawn came third in the “Best Band” category.

He was able to successfully defend this title in 2012 and place his bands (Before the Dawn, Routasielu) in the top 10 of various categories, regardless of the strong competition this year.

In the meantime, Before the Dawn underwent another restructuring - in June 2011 bassist and clean singer Lars Eikind and drummer Atte Palokangas left the band for personal and musical reasons. With new people (Pyry Hanski, bass; Joonas Kauppinen, drums) and a reformed sound, they went on a European tour at the end of 2011 (with Insomnium and MyGrain) and started producing the new album Rise of the Phoenix , which was released in early May 2012 came.

On January 10, 2013 Tuomas Saukkonen announced the end of Before the Dawn, among other projects. He would rather concentrate fully on a new project with Wolfheart .

Music genre

Their music is defined by hard riffs and melodic-melancholy sound. In contrast to other bands of the genre like Bethlehem or Celtic Frost and Forgotten Tomb , Before the Dawn has greater influences from Melodic Death Metal . Saukkonen himself defines the band's style as "Melancholic Scandinavian Metal".
