Curtisia dentata with fruits

Curtisia species are evergreen , medium-sized trees (18 meters). The opposite leaves are simple, leathery and have a serrated leaf edge. Stipules are missing.

Many flowers are grouped together in differently designed inflorescences . The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold. The four sepals are fused. There is only one circle with four fertile stamens . Four carpels have become an under constant ovary fused with a stylus and a four-lobed stigma.

A bitter stone fruit is formed with a core that consists of four seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Occurrence

It is common in southern Africa from Mozambique and Zimbabwe to South Africa. It occurs in the South African provinces of Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. It thrives in evergreen forests from the coast up to an altitude of 1800 meters from the Cape Peninsula to the Zimbabwe-Mozambique highlands.

Systematics

The genus Curtisia was established in 1789 by William Aiton . The botanical genus name Curtisia honors William Curtis , the founder of Botanical Magazine .

There is only one species in the genus Curtisia and therefore in the family:

  • Curtisia dentata (Burm. F.) CASm. ( Syn . : Curtisia faginea Ait. , Curtisia fagifolia Salisb. )

Few authors see Curtisia faginea Ait. as a separate species.

The closest related is the Grubbiaceae family .
