Custoza (also - especially in historical texts - Custozza ) is a faction from Sommacampagna southwest of Verona , which was the scene of two battles between Austria and Italy.
location
Custoza is located near the river Tione (which was probably the outflow of Lake Garda immediately after the Ice Age - the wide meander valley is far too expansive for the small Tione), not far from the Po plain and about the same distance from Sommacampagna, Valeggio and Villafranca .
history
On July 25, 1848, General Commander Johann Josef Wenzel Graf Radetzky defeated the army of Sardinia under King Albert ( first battle at Custozza ); on June 24, 1866, Archduke Albrecht of Austria defeated the somewhat larger Italian army under the Piedmontese commander-in-chief, General Alfonso La Marmora ( second battle near Custozza ).
An ossuary in the form of a 38 m high tower near the village commemorates the numerous dead in the two battles.
The Custozza barracks in Neulengbach is named after the battles of Custozza.
economy
Custoza is also known for its DOC white wine ( Bianco di Custoza ) with an annual production of around 100,000 hl.
