The Cystobasidiomycetes are a class of mushrooms (Basidiomycota).
Features and way of life
In the cell wall carbohydrates, fucose is absent as a component that is present in the other Pucciniomycotina. All representatives form phragmobasidia and are dimorphic, develop as two life stages: The haploid stage grows yeast-like . These colonies are pink-orange, only in Naohidea they are white. Bannoa and Erythrobasidium do not form basidia, but conidia . These two genera also have a special, hydrogenated coenzyme Q10 system, and they form a separate clade within the class .
No teleomorphs are known in this order . The anamorphic Cyrenella elegans has conidia arms spread out like spokes. Their yeast stage is orange in color. Cyrenella as well as Sakaguchia colonize water locations. Both genera form teliospores .
Several representatives are parasites on mushrooms .
Systematics
The Pucciniomycetes are the sister taxon of a group consisting of Microbotryomycetes , Mixiomycetes and Agaricostilbomycetes . The Pucciniomycetes comprise three orders:
- Cystobasidiales : anamorphic and dimorphic yeasts
-
Erythrobasidiales
- Bannoa
- Erythrobasidium
- Rhodotorula (part)
- Sporobolomyces (part)
- Naohideales
Not assigned to any order:
- Cyrenella
- Sakaguchia colonizes marine locations
The relationships within the class can be found in the following cladogram :
