The Cyttopsinae are a subfamily of the Parazenidae within the Petersfischischen and comprise three of four species of the family (all except Parazen pacificus ). They occur in the western Atlantic and in the western and southeastern Pacific over the continental slopes at depths of 140 to 700 meters.

features

Species of the Cyttopsinae are 7.8 to 31 cm long and have, like all St. Peter's fish-like, a high-backed, laterally flattened body, large eyes and two separate dorsal fins. The first is usually supported by 6 to 7, more rarely 8, fin spines. The pectoral fins have 13 to 14, less often 15 soft rays, the pelvic fins, which are below or slightly in front of the pectoral fins, have 9 soft rays. The body is covered with small round scales. Larger, bumpy scales are found along the lateral center line and between the throat and anus. Scales are absent along the base of the dorsal and anal fin. The number of vertebrae is 32. Some neural processes are oriented anteriorly, dorsally or vertically. A supranural (predorsal). The lower section of the first fin support of the dorsal fin lies in front of the first gap between the neural processes and is in contact with the neural process of the first vertebra. The outer ends of the dorsal and anal fin supports are widened laterally. Two fin carriers of the anal fin lie in front of the first hemal arch , four in front of the hemical arch of the third vertebra of the caudal spine.
