Dénes Bartha

Dénes R. Bartha (born October 2, 1908 in Budapest , † September 7, 1993 near Budapest) was a Hungarian musicologist .

Life

Bartha studied in Berlin with Hermann Abert , Friedrich Blume , Johannes Wolf , Curt Sachs , Erich Moritz von Hornbostel , Arnold Schering and Hans Joachim Moser and received his doctorate in 1930. Afterwards he was curator at the music department of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest until 1942 and has worked alongside 1935 as a lecturer. In 1947 he founded the music history department at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and held a professorship there until his death.

In addition, Bartha was visiting professor at Smith College (1964), at Harvard University (1964/65), at Cornell University (1965/66), at the University of Pittsburgh (1966/67), where he later became Andrew W. Mellon Professorship (1969–1979) and at the University of Washington (1980/81).
