The inland dunes near Siegenburg and Offenstetten are a nature reserve and fauna and flora habitat (FFH) in Abensberg and Siegenburg in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim in Bavaria .
location
The nature reserve (NSG) is divided into two parts. The smaller (9 ha) NSG is about 4.2 kilometers east of Abensberg and the larger part (18 hectares) is about 1.2 kilometers west of Siegenburg. The portion near Siegenburg is part of the landscape protection area Dürnbucher Forest in the Altlandkreis Kelheim and both parts are part of the congruent FFH area nature reserve 'Inland dunes near Siegenburg and Offenstetten' .
description
The approximately 25 hectare area is an occurrence of drift sand , deck sand and terrace sand in Bavaria. After the last Ice Age , the soil in Central Europe was insufficiently protected from erosion because of the sparse vegetation . Light grains of sand were blown out and piled up here to form mighty longitudinal dunes that are still up to ten meters high . They were constantly on the move until the dunes were forested. Today most of the sand dunes are covered by pine forests, where some endangered plants grow. The earlier use of the forests, the raking out of litter for the cattle stalls, contributed significantly to the nutrient poverty of the location. The living conditions of the sand site on the tree-free, open areas with silver grass corridors and woven carpets are particularly striking . Here you can find spring spark , sand straw flower and blue-winged sand bug .
Geotope
The dunes are designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as significant geotopes dunes W of Siegenburg (273R012) and dunes in Seeholz NW of Offenstetten (273R011). A large part of the dunes are formed here as line dunes that have formed parallel to the prevailing wind direction in a west-east direction. But there are also cross and sickle dunes.
The nature reserve was designated on December 1, 1984.
