The Düsseldorfer Wanderbund , also called Düsseldorfer Wanderbund from 1881 , is an association of male private individuals founded in Düsseldorf in 1881 with the aim of organizing hikes in the Düsseldorf region, making it one of the oldest groups in the German hiking movement .

The founder of the Wanderbund was the Düsseldorf magistrate Emil Hartwich , who in 1881 emphasized with the culturally critical writing What we suffer from , that physical fitness can make a significant contribution to promoting the people and youth . Hartwich was supported by the Mayor of Düsseldorf Wilhelm von Becker . The first officially documented hike was carried out on March 18, 1882 from Gerresheim via Haus Morp and Erkrath to Hilden . Under the motto “No storms prevent”, the hiking association's hikes took place regularly on Saturdays throughout the year.

At the time of its formation, the Wanderbund was intertwined through staff unions with both the Liberal Association and the Düsseldorf Rowing Association in 1880, as well as through Hartwich and Becker's relationships with the Düsseldorf judiciary and administration. Until the First World War , the Düsseldorf Wanderbund remained a reflection of the Düsseldorf upper class, because its members were mainly recruited from civil servants, lawyers, officers, manufacturers, painters and teachers. During the Weimar Republic , the hiking association opened up to a wider social class, but remained a men's association . An enthusiastic member from the early phase of the history of the Wanderbund was the writer Herbert Eulenberg , who published a hiking book about Düsseldorf in 1910 .

To this day, the hiking association consists of a larger group exclusively of men, some of whom meet on Wednesday afternoons for hikes - “joint exercise in nature and culture” - mostly over distances between eight and twelve kilometers. Hiking areas are mainly the Düsseldorf area as well as historically and culturally interesting Düsseldorf city districts. The hikes regularly end with conversation, eating and drinking in a eatery. The hiking association is led by a board called " Baasschaft ". To date, over 7500 hikes have been documented. In 1984, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded the Wanderbund the Eichendorff plaque .

In recognition of the folk and sports pedagogical merits of Hartwich, whose tragic love affair with Elisabeth von Ardenne had provided the writer Theodor Fontanes with the literary material for the novel Effi Briest , the city of Düsseldorf named a street in the Oberkassel district in Hartwichstrasse . In addition, the city opened a Hartwich hiking trail in the Grafenberg Forest with the hiking association , where a plaque draws attention to its historical significance. In 2018, the Düsseldorfer Wanderbund and the Düsseldorfer Jonges installed a bronze Hartwich plaque on the old district court building in the old town .
