D'Angelo (musician)
D'Angelo (born February 11, 1974 in Richmond , Virginia ; real name Michael Eugene Archer ) is an American rhythm and blues musician of the so-called neo-soul trend, who began in the mid-1990s in the USA loomed.
life and career
Michael "D'Angelo" Archer was born in 1974 to a minister in Richmond, Virginia. At 18, he won an amateur contest three times in a row at Harlem's Apollo Theater. He then spent some time with the hip hop act IDU. In 1993 he was signed by EMI . He wrote and co-produced the song "U Will Know" for the movie "Jason's Lyric", in 1995 his debut "Brown Sugar" was released. The album's title track received three Grammy nominations and an American Music Award. On July 24, 1997 , D'Angelo performed live on stage at a Prince after-show in New York at the Tramps music club.
His second solo album "Voodoo" was released five years later. The first release Left & Right (featuring Method Man and Redman) got good rankings, but the subsequent release Untitled (How Does It Feel) was a huge success, largely due to the video in which D'Angelo is alone and naked to the waist Song interpreted - it was then nominated for the MTV Video Award and is ranked 44th most influential music videos on VH1 (among other things, the video concept was adopted by Dendemann in 3 1/2 minutes ). In 2002, he made it onto Q Magazine's "50 Bands To See Before You Die" list. In 2005, D'Angelo came into conflict with the law over drug possession. In September 2005 he was seriously injured in a car accident.
Voodoo also shaped the music in the following years through the unusual use of groove concepts. The radio broadcaster ByteFM spoke of "precisely [m] missing the beats". Bassist Pino Palladino, who played on the album, believes that D'Angelo was influenced by sampling in his approach.
Apparently triggered by the anti-racism protests in the USA in November 2014, his third studio album Black Messiah (together with Vanguard) was released on December 15, 2014 after 15 years on the RCA label. The reviews have been downright positive.
