Fragmentation hand grenade DM41

The DM 41 or DM41A1 is a fragmentation hand grenade used in the Bundeswehr . It is a replica of the American M26A2 hand grenade with M215 detonator. It was made by Diehl from Nuremberg ( LOS DN) and the Fábrica Militar de Braço de Prata Lisbon (LOS FMP). After the introduction of the DM51 explosive fragmentation hand grenade in 1974/75, no further examples were produced and the DM41 was replaced. The DM41 hand grenade consists of the top part with a lip socket and the bottom part with a retaining ring. Before folding, the prefabricated fragment spiral is inserted into the hand grenade body. The splinter spiral is made of square steel, which is notched along its entire length on the later inside before winding. The notches serve as predetermined breaking points when the explosives explode. The explosive charge consists of around 150 g of Composition B and is poured into the body of the hand grenade. The percussion fuse is screwed into the mouth hole socket of the hand grenade top. The hand grenade detonator ignites after a burning time of 4.5 ± 0.5 s. The DM72 hand grenade detonator is screwed into the DM41 hand grenade, the DM82 hand grenade detonator in the DM41A1 hand grenade. The external distinguishing feature in addition to the lettering is the protective cap used on the DM82 hand grenade detonator with clamping jaws for the ring on the cotter pin. Remaining stocks were re-ignited on the DM82 percussion fuse in the ammunition depots Kropp (LOS KRO), Liebenau (LOS LIE) and Pflimmern (LOS PFL).

Controversy

On October 19 and 20, 2014, arms deliveries for the defending Kurds were dropped over the city of Kobane, which was besieged by the IS jihadists . In the process, wind probably drove one of the 28 drops carried out by American aircraft. On October 21, 2014, a video was published on YouTube that apparently shows IS fighters with the captured weapons. Numerous boxes of DM41 can be seen in the course of the video. When one of the hand grenades is taken out of its packaging, the lettering can be clearly seen. It is noticeable that all the boxes and the example shown are only the basic DM41 model from FMP. Following this video, the media dealt with the question of how hand grenades intended for the German Bundeswehr could get into IS hands. Originally the arms delivery was put together by the government of the autonomous region of Kurdistan and its armed forces " Peshmerga ".

In the response of the Federal Government to the minor question from MPs Jan van Aken , Christine Buchholz , Annette Groth , other MPs and the DIE LINKE parliamentary group on November 7, 2014, an official position is given. When asked what knowledge the Federal Government has about the content of the dropped arms deliveries, it cannot provide the requested information due to the need for confidentiality and "because it contains information related to the intelligence activities of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) ". The federal government has no reliable information about the origin of the hand grenades. In addition, she sees “no concrete starting points for further research” to clarify the origin.

Training hand grenade DM48

Cross-section of the DM48 training hand grenade

The DM48 training hand grenade is a replica of the DM41 hand grenade and replaces the DM28 training hand grenade. It is used for training and has the same weight, shape and handling. Its light blue color ( RAL 5012) clearly distinguishes it from the combat version. The DM48 training hand grenade consists of:

  1. Upper part of the hand grenade detonator DM62 consisting of: striker, tension spring, detonator bracket and cotter pin with ring
  2. Hand grenade detonator base DM62 with screwed-in delay piece
  3. Sealing ring
  4. Training grenade body
  5. Training hand grenade charge DM38
  6. Sealing plug

The hand grenade body made of cast iron has two bores. The hand grenade detonator is screwed into the upper hole with an internal thread. The lower hole allows the combustion gases of the training hand grenade charge to escape and is closed with a felt plug. This prevents foreign bodies from entering the interior. 4.5 ± 0.5 seconds after the throw, the DM62 hand grenade detonator ignites the DM38 pyrotechnic training hand grenade charge, which produces a bang and smoke. By renewing the parts except the hand grenade body, the DM48 training hand grenade can be reused. The training hand grenade charge DM38 is always delivered in one piece with the hand grenade detonator base DM62.
