The railcars DR 701 to 704 were a series of first generation railcars that were built as a so-called heavy version for the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

history

After the railway technical exhibition in Seddin 1924 in Seddin on which the railcar 851 the engine works Maybach - the only car with a diesel engine - was issued, the German Reichsbahn (DR) put emphasis on the procurement and use of rail cars with internal combustion engines and diesel or benzene - mechanical drive. Therefore, four heavy-duty wagons with a net weight of around 20 t and two of the light-weight type with around 13.5 t were procured. The heavy-duty railcars were built using rivets, while those of the lightweight design were made using welded construction.

The railcars 701–704 were delivered to the DR in 1926. They had an open-plan compartment with a capacity of 50 people. At first they did not have a toilet. During a later renovation, the floor plan was changed into a third class room and a second class single compartment with a toilet. Smoking was prohibited in the railcars.

The machine system was composed of commercially available truck components. Only the electro-pneumatic control of the engine and transmission was an in-house development by AEG . The engine was arranged lengthways in driver's cab 1. The electro-pneumatic control made it possible to control up to four machine systems from one operator station. The mechanical gearbox WG 70 from NAG was constructed in a similar way to the Mylius gearbox , the difference was in the operation. With the Mylius gearbox, the gear was preselected, with the NAG gearbox, the shift lever could only be moved after the drive switch was set to 0 or 1.

The railcars were used primarily at the Frankfurt (Oder) , Pyritz and Meseritz depots .

At the beginning of the war, the vehicles were initially shut down. After the propulsion system had been converted to LPG, they were back in use. Only the VT 702 remained with the DR after the war . The other vehicles were lost in the war. Said railcar was still 1957 at Bw Dresden-Pieschen and was scrapped the same year.
