The DR 820 railcar was created as a single unit by converting the DRG 710 railcar . The vehicle can be viewed as a test vehicle for vehicles with fluid transmission. The vehicle remained a one-off and was sold to a private railroad during the Second World War . It is no longer there today.

History and operational use

The rebuilding of the railcar was extensive and was completed by 1936. The first test drive took place in November 1936. The cooling of the engine lubricating oil turned out to be inadequate, which resulted in another modification and further test drives in early 1937.

After the conversion, the railcar stayed in the Reichsbahndirektion Münster (Westf) and was based in Oldenburg . During the war the car was rented to Kahlgrund-Eisenbahn AG . The vehicle was taken over in 1943 after it was subjected to a detailed examination in the RAW Dessau . It was first designated VT 201, from 1954 VT 51.

The vehicle was in use until 1975, after which it was retired and scrapped.

Constructive features

The vehicle part was adopted unchanged from DRG 710 . The main dimensions of both vehicles were identical. The machine system was mounted on a support frame and suspended elastically on the underframe. It consisted of the eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine in a horizontal arrangement from VOMAG and the fluid transmission JJ 5.4 CC 3.3 from Voith , consisting of two fluid converters and a clutch.

After 1946, a 220 hp MAN engine was installed in the vehicle . At the same time as this conversion, the original center entry of the railcar was removed. This increased the number of seats to 62. By installing new buffers, the length had increased to 13,650 mm.
