Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid ( DTPA ) is a five-protonic acid and is chemically related to EDTA . It is used as a chelating complexing agent. Their salts are called "pentetates".

The excellent complex formation properties, especially in the case of metal cations with a large ionic radius, make DTPA ideal for use in medicine and agriculture in fertilizers. For example, it is used in chelation therapy to detoxify after accidents with heavy metals and to complex gadolinium as a contrast agent ( gadopentetate dimeglumine ) in MRI examinations.

Extraction and presentation

DTPA is obtained by reacting diethylenetriamine with formaldehyde and sodium cyanide in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
