Dale Joseph Melczek (born November 9, 1938 in Detroit ) is an American clergyman and bishop emeritus of Gary .

Life

The Archbishop of Detroit, Cardinal John Francis Dearden , ordained him a priest on June 6, 1964 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Detroit and titular bishop of Tragurium on December 3, 1982 . The Archbishop of Detroit, Edmund Casimir Szoka , donated him episcopal ordination on January 27 of the next year ; Co-consecrators were Harold Robert Perry SVD , Auxiliary Bishop in New Orleans , and Arthur Henry Krawczak , Auxiliary Bishop in Detroit.

On August 19, 1992, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator to Gary . On October 28, 1995, he was named coadjutor bishop of Gary. After Norbert Felix Gaughan's retirement , he succeeded him on June 1, 1996 as Bishop of Gary.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on November 24, 2014.
