Damianos I (born July 10, 1848 in Marathokampos on Samos , † August 14, 1931 ) was from 1897 to 1931 Greek Orthodox "Patriarch of Jerusalem and all of Palestine" .

The son of the married couple Konstantinos and Elisabeth joined the Jerusalem Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher as a monk after completing high school in 1872 . After his ordination, he first worked in the Jerusalem Metochion zu Taganrog , where he learned Russian. With the rank of Archimandrite, he then worked as a representative of the Jerusalem Patriarchate in Tbilisi , and from 1887 in Constantinople . In 1893 Patriarch Gerasimos I consecrated him Archbishop of Philadelpheia and appointed him Patriarchal Vicar of Bethlehem . In 1896 he represented Jerusalem at the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II in Moscow. After Gerasimos' death Damianos was elected as his successor and enthroned on August 15, 1897. Disputes within the patriarchy led to the closure of the Theological College of the Holy Cross in 1909 and the banishment of two high-ranking members of the Brotherhood from the Holy Sepulcher by Damianos: Meletios Metaxakis and Chrysostomos Papadopoulos . Two other crises occurred in 1920 and 1924. On July 9, 1929, the Patriarch suffered a stroke. He died on August 14, 1931. Metropolitan Keladion was appointed to the Locumtenens by Ptolemais.
