The Kibbutz Dan ( Hebrew דָּן) is a collective settlement in the Upper Galilee , northern Israel .

The village is eight kilometers east of Kirjat Schmona , close to the Lebanese border at the foot of the Golan . The kibbutz had 732 inhabitants in 2018.

The kibbutz was founded in 1939 as a tower-and-palisade settlement . Its name is derived from the ancient city of Dan, the remains of which are on Tel Dan (one kilometer north) (mentioned in the Bible e.g. in 1 Kings 12:29; 1 Sam 3:20). The area of ​​settlement of the tribe of Dan is said to have been there (mentioned in the Bible e.g. in Genesis 14:14; Jos 19: 40-48). This is also where the Dan River , the most important source river of the Jordan , has its source .

The breeding of trout and the production of Osietra caviar are economically important .

The “Dan Nature Reserve” with lush vegetation in the area of ​​the river and the ancient settlement hill Tel Dan as well as a museum at the kibbutz are interesting for tourists. a. with information on the drainage of the Hule level and with finds from Tel.

Kibbutz Dan is the official start or finish point of the Israel National Trail "Shvil Israel", a continuous long-distance hiking trail to Eilat .
