Life

Study time

Gesell was the son of a leather merchant. He attended the Mannheim gallery, studied from 1845 for 2½ years at the Düsseldorf Academy , where he also learned the technique of lithography , and then studied at the Antwerp Academy for 1½ years. In 1848 he took part in the revolutionary uprisings through close relationships with student associations such as corps and fraternities . He created many lithographed group portraits of Heidelberg and Freiburg corporations . After visiting the universities of Heidelberg, Freiburg, Gießen, Marburg and Würzburg, he came to Lenzkirch in 1854 .

Time in Lenzkirch

There he was commissioned to paint the Lenzkirch Rössle landlord and straw hat manufacturer Johann Georg Tritscheller and his family. During his frequent summer stays in Lenzkirch, portraits of wealthy straw hat manufacturers, watch and glass dealers were created. An eye ailment forced him to give up his precise painting style.

Conservator of the Wessenberg Municipal Gallery in Konstanz

In 1879 he was appointed curator of the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie in Konstanz and worked there from 1879 to 1888. Towards the end of his office, from 1887/1888 a heart disease and its effects prevented him in office.

Gsell's legacy of hand drawings with self-portraits, figure and animal sketches and landscape scenes went to the Städtische Wessenberg-Gemäldegalerie Konstanz and was registered there under the inventory number J 80, No. 294 and exhibited for the first time in 1979/1980.

"The drawings are never rigid or boring, but full of life and excellent natural truth, the landscape sketches almost vibrate with vitality in the light of a bright day"
