Daniel Glaser (sociologist)

Daniel Glaser (born December 23, 1918 in New York City , † January 10, 2017 in Needham , Massachusetts ) was an American sociologist and criminologist . Most recently, he was a professor at the University of Southern California .

Life

Glaser studied, interrupted from military service, at the University of Chicago , where he took his bachelor's degree in 1939 , his master's degree in 1947 and his doctorate in 1954 . At the end of his military service he was a prison officer in the American zone of occupation in Germany. From 1954 to 1968 he taught as a professor of sociology at the University of Illinois , then until 1970 at Rutgers University and finally, beyond his retirement , at the University of Southern California .

In 1956, Glaser supplemented Sutherland's theory of differential association with his theory of differential identification .

Glaser was the author or editor of 12 books and about 200 articles.

In 1976 he received the EH Sutherland Award and in 1990 the August Vollmer Award of the American Society of Criminology (ASC). In 1980 he was ASC president.
