Daniel Josefsohn

Daniel Josefsohn (born September 22, 1961 in Hamburg ; † August 13, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German photographer . He lived and worked in Berlin. In particular, his pictures from the 1990s (especially the MTV poster “Bitch”) gained greater attention and helped shape the public perception of this time.

He was creative director of the Volksbühne Berlin from 2010/11 to 2012.

Life

Daniel Josefsohn was born to Jewish parents, his father's family came from Romania , his mother's family from Hungary . His father Serge, a former engineer in the Israeli merchant navy, ran a nightclub in Hamburg and died in 2004.

Daniel Josefsohn attended various schools, including a Waldorf boarding school . However, he did not obtain a school leaving certificate or regular professional training. As a teenager he earned his income by skating and as a waiter. On August 14, 1986, he was arrested in an attempted bank fraud. In 1989 he bought his first camera.

Josefsohn became known in 1994 through the advertising campaign Miststück for the music channel MTV .

In the following years he worked as a photographer for the major German print magazines.

Daniel Josefsohn had a son and lived with his partner Karin Müller. In November 2012 he suffered a stroke and has since been left-sided with walking difficulties. In 2014, he and his partner wrote regularly in ZEITmagazin about his life before and after the stroke. The couple received the German LeadAward for the best reportage photography for the series “Am Leben” .
