Daniel Joseph MacDonald PC (born July 23, 1918 in Bothwell , Prince Edward Island , † September 30, 1980 ) was a Canadian officer and politician of the Liberal Party who was a member of the House of Commons and Minister for several years .

Life

MacDonald, who was a farmer by trade and bought his own farm in 1938, joined the Prince Edward Highlanders unit of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in August 1940 . In June 1943 he moved to the Cape Breton Regiment and participated in this until 1945 in World War II , where he was last promoted to sergeant in October 1943 during his service in Italy . He later served in the Prince Edward Island Regiment, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel .

He began his political career in his home province when he was elected for the first time as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for the Liberal Party on December 10, 1962 in the constituency of King’s-1st District and remained a member until 1972. After the Liberal Party won an absolute majority in the 1966 provincial elections, MacDonald was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in his cabinet on July 28, 1966 by Alex Campbell , the new Prime Minister of Prince Edward Island , and remained a member until 1972 .

In the general election of October 30, 1972 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Canadian House of Commons and represented in this until his defeat in the election of May 22, 1979 the constituency of Cardigan . A few weeks after the 1972 election, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him for the first time as Minister for Veterans Affairs in the 20th Canadian Cabinet on November 27, 1972 , and held this ministerial office until June 3, 1979.

On February 18, 1980 , MacDonald was re-elected as a member of the House of Commons in the Cardigan constituency and was a member of this until his death on September 30, 1980. At the same time he was again Minister for Veterans Affairs from March 3 to September 30, 1980 in the 22nd cabinet of Canada, also formed by Trudeau .
