from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel J. Kleitman (born October 4, 1934 in New York City ) is an American mathematician who studies combinatorics .

Daniel Kleitman

Kleitman studied physics at Cornell University ( Bachelor 1954) and Harvard University , where he received his master’s degree in 1955 and his doctorate under Julian Schwinger in 1958 ( Static Properties of Heavy Fermi-Particles; Deuteron-Nucleon Scattering at High Energy ). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen in 1958/59 . 1960 to 1966 he was an assistant professor of physics at Brandeis University . There he switched to mathematics under the influence of Paul Erdős , with whom he published several times. In 1966 he became an Associate Professor and in 1969 Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1979 to 1984 he was head of the faculty there.

Kleitman deals with combinatorics ( graph theory ) with applications in operations research .

He was a math advisor for the film Good Will Hunting .

With a few other mathematicians ( Ronald Graham , Douglas West , George B. Purdy , Paul Erdős , Fan Chung ) he also published under the pseudonym G. W. Peck from 1979 (a mathematical term is even named after Peck: Peck Poset ). A total of around 16 scientific papers appeared under the name.

From 1975 to 1982 he was editor of the J. Algebraic and Discrete Methods of SIAM . He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1973) and the New York Academy of Sciences .

His PhD students include Stephen Altschul and Michael Saks .
